On the third day of anime, Naijeru brought to you: A Chinese production? Yes, today’s 12 Days of Anime post is on The King’s Avatar, which did in fact air this year even though it seems ancient at this point. While it ended up making waves during its season for the wrong reason (more on that in a bit), it was definitely still memorable to me regardless.
First and foremost, the song “Xin Yang 信仰” by Zhang Jie 张杰 is amazing. Not only is it the opening theme for the series, but its use throughout this final scene was fantastic. The music really brought more emotion to the rivalry between characters, and you could feel how much passion Han Wenqing specifically, had for the game of Glory.
I also very much enjoyed the choreography of the fight. It was obvious that they were actually fighting each other, and their movements were often in response to the other. Being a gamer myself, I could start to guess at their individual strategies as they moved and attacked. Lastly, the dialogue between the two gave away their deep-seated rivalry.
It’s unfortunate that The King’s Avatar was being called the “Chinese Sword Art Online” throughout the time it was airing. I think that, in addition to it being produced in China, took away from some of the popularity this show could have gotten.
What did you think about this series? If you have seen it, what was your favorite scene? Also, be sure to let me know if you are participating in the 12 Days of Anime! I would love to read more posts from fellow anime bloggers.
