Let’s start the 12 Days of Anime out strong. Were you able to identify the exact moment just by reading the title of this post? If for some reason, you have been living under a rock for the last year, I am referring to a moment somewhere around 2/3’s of the way into the brilliance that is Your Name. No, not your name! I’m referring to Kimi no Na wa, the film that has taken the community by storm.
Taki and Mitsuha were destined to meet eventually, and they finally did. This excellently-done scene marked the last major turning point in the film.
Being the first time that they’ve met (well, technically it’s the second), I thought their conversations were surprisingly normal. Just imagine being in a long distance relationship for a while. Eventually, you must meet the person you love for the first time. Sounds scary to me, right? But this feeling of intimacy isn’t only apparent in this scene, but rather throughout the entire film. After all, the whole basis of the story is two teenagers who have a strong connection, despite the distance.
This particular interaction of elements takes advantage of the areas that this film truly excels in. As noticeable in the above images, there is a perfect use of lighting and lens flare, creating real depth in the scene. Additionally, while you can’t hear it, the strategic use of sound and music really helps set the tone for what is a genuinely emotional moment.
Believe it or not, Your Name isn’t just one of my top picks this year. It now ranks as one of my favorite anime of all time. I could go on and on all day about different scenes and aspects, but this one was definitely a cut above the rest.
What did you think about this film? If you have seen it, what was your favorite scene? Also, be sure to let me know if you are participating in the 12 Days of Anime! I would love to read more posts from fellow anime bloggers.
